The Vanishing Season by Jodi Lynn Anderson

The Vanishing Season by Jodi Lynn Anderson

Okay, I'll be honest. I didn't love this book. it took me over a month and a half to read it and over half of it was read this past week because I've been forcing myself to read it. This is similar to Tiger Lily and I think I may have gone too far to say that I loved it, but I also feel that was influenced by the fact that I didn't read it on my own time.

This book starts off slow, it's sort of interesting but you're thinking just get to the point. In the middle of the book there isn't much going on, and that is also the point in which I decided to take up The Maze Runner instead. By the end, you are just wanting to know who it is, but it just keeps going on and on. Throughout the whole story, too, you can tell that there is romance, but it isn't a key characteristic that makes me think ship them!

It is extremely well written, and there is a very interesting narrator that shocked me at the end, but I can't say that I loved this book. Overall, I would give this book a B, maybe B+.

My Analysis (Not Really) of Fandoms

I think that all you have to do to be a part of a fandom is to like the book, simple as that. But, I also believe that there are different levels of fandom(hood?) and which levels are truly superior to others. To be clear, this is mostly about book fandoms, sorry, there isn't much else in my life.

0.5. There is a movie: you are an untouchable (if we are comparing this to the Indian caste system). The only reason you are reading the book is because there is a movie, and while reading it you weren't drooling over the pages. Or showing any sign of true love for it. You know if you are a part of this group, you just know because when other people talk about that book you just roll your eyes.

1. A Fan: this is the lowest cast in a fandom. You like the book, you enjoyed it, you are anticipating the sequel, but you aren't going to kill for the first copy. When the movie comes out you aren't going to the premier, you're going to the opening day, weekend, or when it becomes cheap showing. There is nothing wrong with just being a fan of a book, but when you talk to others that are at a higher level caste for that particular series, they will look down on you.

2. A Follower: this is the group of people who check to see the release date or the sequels, movies, and when the DVD comes out, but they would choose their friends sleepover the premier. You probably own all the books, and might buy the DVD when it comes out, but you find other things in life. Again, there is nothing wrong with being in this group of people, some people just like some books more than others.

3. A Fangirl(or boy): this is sometimes hard to distinguish between A Fanatic. You do your best to go to the premier, you search for times and places to meet the author and actors, you do absolutely everything you can to support the movie, but sometimes things just don't work out. Even at this stage of fandom, people may consider you a little bit crazy, but that's good. I promise.

4,5. A Fanatic: there are two types, neither of which are really all that much higher on the caste.

Just Found Out Fan: it's okay, sometimes it takes buzz to hear about something. I am a fanatic over The Maze Runner, but it took the movie for me to find out (sort of...it's complicated). You know you are at this stage when you dress up as characters Halloween, and eventually realize that it is the end all be all to life. The only reason this is second to highest to those that were original fans of the book is because they will think that you are inferior, when really they should be happy to find another person to share their love with. Right?

Original Fan: you pre-ordered the book the moment you saw the cover. And, when you heard about the movie coming out you nearly died. This has been the END ALL BE ALL to your life for quite a while, and you consider yourself at the top of the caste. I'm putting you here because you've had to be tortured with waiting longer than all the others, so...this is your gift.

The Maze Runner Movie Review

Okay, so I must first say this- Thomas, Newt, and Minho: The Golden Trio. Second, it is an amazing adaptation, so if you were having any doubts about if you should see it or not, just go and see it; there will be no regrets. Thirdly, it was just amazing.

The way that this movie was amazing was amazing in the same way that if i stay was amazing, it was extremely true to the idea. With Divergent I feel like they were true to scenes, but weren't true to the book and it's ideas; therefore, it wasn't nearly as good of an adaptation. Like if i stay, The Maze Runner was true to the idea and feels of it, and just had scenes changed, left out, or added (all of which were fine, or good). The Fault in Our Stars was a good adaptation because of how it was almost exactly in line with all of the scenes, and was extremely true to the feels; I didn't like to the book but that adaptation was perfect.

I recommend this to fans of Divergent, The Hunger Games, Shatter Me, and almost all dystopias/ thrillers.

The Sad Process of Editing, Part 1

So, I've started editing a manuscript of mine and thought that it would be appropriate to share my thoughts about some things that happen while editing.

1. Done, you've finished word vomiting. Now what? Either: 1, just stop for the day and go watch TV, or 2, start editing.
...it's been two weeks and I've edited a paragraph, grr. Well, maybe you should print it out and start editing, or force yourself to do at least one page, or wait it out until you feel the urge to do it. If you can't get into it after a while, though, consider the idea that it might just not be worth it if you are so unmotivated.

I like to print out my manuscript and use colorful flair pens to make notes with, then once I'm done with a section I put all of the changes into the computer. If they are change conversation, or something like that, changes I choose to make a note and then fix them on the computer.

Any way that you do it, though, is the correct way to edit (unless you are doing it while word vomiting, that is wrong)

2. You're so close to another thousand in your word count, but then you come across a huge section that must be deleted. First, you think 'I can't delete this!' then, 'but I have to', then 'no!', but eventually the editor in you will press backspace. It will hurt, deeply. I just had to delete 1,700 words with one press of the button, just power through it and you will come out on top.

3. If you are that concerned about word count maybe consider that the piece isn't finished yet, but if it is then just think to yourself 'it will be okay. I've actually gained word count while editing and have deleted huge chunks of the story, making it a million times better.

How To Make Yourself Seem Like a Car Person

1. Say that you've watched every episode of Top Gear UK (and do so)
2. Know all of the really expensive car companies (more than just Lamborghini and Ferrari)
3. Tell everyone that talks about cars that American ones are terrible
4. Be correct when you tell your whole group of friends what the fastest car in the world is (it's not a                 Veyron)
5. ALL of the names of car companies must be in your brain, not every car, but all of the car companies

Feeling Awesome

I don't have much to say on this post other than the idea that some things just make you feel awesome. I feel awesome at the sand dune arch in arches national park. Where do you feel awesome?

If I Stay Movie

I watched the if i stay movie last night at 7, and it was amazing. I loved this books so much and I think it was very true to the book, it wasn't word for word, scene for scene, but their weren't any dramatic changes that hurt the plot. It was amazingly well done and I was crying the entire time, go see it!

Inspiration

I've always wanted a writer to tell me what their exact inspiration was, and usually they do. The only problem I faced, though, was that I couldn't find that exact inspiration on my own, which upset me. Later on, though, I realized that you can't have the exact same inspiration as someone else, you have to find your own. You may have a random image flash through your mind, but you also may visit a beautiful national park, you just have to find your own. That is all I have to say on the subject, find your own inspiration and don't take someone else's.

A Review of We Were Liars

The first thing I must do is tell my thoughts about the end: OMG!!! WHAT?! HOW DID I NOT SEE THAT COMING???

Now, down to earth.

The cover is actually really fun to just run your finger across, which I did many times while soaking up the pages. There are five parts to the 225 page story, and each of them make perfect sense. Chapters end in the middle of the page, and then the next chapter begins immediately after that (underneath it).

When you google what this wonderful books is about there isn't really anything there that will help you decide whether to read it or not, and I can't help you on that because I know that I will either say nothing or everything. Just read it, it is amazing.

You are immediately grabbed into the book- I read it in one day- but it isn't like a BAM sort of grab, it is a much more mysterious type of come read me. It is an amazing books that I couldn't put down until I had read every last word, I was up very late. It is amazing. Once I got to the end, even though I was about to fall asleep, I couldn't because my mind had so many thoughts rushing through it about that end.

Anyway, read it. It is amazing.

Something that I Learned from the Bunny

When I edit something that I write I give people the first draft, completely unedited not matter how bad I think it is. The reason I do this is not because I enjoy criticism, it is because I might think that something is terrible when another person could love it. I learned this from a bunny that is currently residing in my yard, a lot of people love him while I really hate him.

I also edit my work, but I want other people's thoughts first. For every draft I give people a copy so that they can see it and tell me what they like, which could be different from what I like.

Rain, Wonderful.

I love rain and yesterday I wrote a few of my feelings/thoughts down about it:

Tiny little drops
pitter patter pat pat pat
tranquil in my mind

It’s like a million little drops of happiness hit your face; like a million drops of beauty, peace, and openness. Every time one of them hit your face it is like waking up to early morning sunbeams shining onto the plate of breakfast that your partner just made for you. With every teardrop shaped ball of water you can comfort yourself, knowing that if you are cold there will be people that love you to come and help. Rain, that is what life is about.

What do you think? Answer in the comments below.

Photo's of Green Nature

lilly of the valley with rain drops on it's leaf

grass
a fern in a patch of lilly of the valley

pine needles
I love photography and I especially love photography of nature, even more green. I read here, http://www.colour-affects.co.uk/psychological-properties-of-colours, that green reassures us because when there is lots of green around it is a sign of plenty and lack of famine. That is why I love looking at this color, why I love creating memories with this beautiful color that comes in so many wonderful shades.

If you love green, tell me why in the comments below.

Ideas in the Middle of Writing a Story

I hope that I'm not alone in this: when you are in the middle of  writing a long and thoughtful story and then you get another idea, and then another, until you can't retain all of your ideas any longer. Isn't that annoying? What I do in this situation is just start writing the idea down- it doesn't matter if you are 2% finished with your story or 99% done, just start writing the idea down- and the moment you can't think of what to write next, go back to your original story. Of course, you could get a very mild case of writer's block in the first page and therefore can't get the plot going, well all you need to do is add a comment about everything that happens and then take the story from there when you are done or sick with the original story that you were writing on.

If you like this suggestion, please take it, but if you don't add ones that you do like in the comments below so other people can know other ideas.

My Favorite YA Books

I love young adult books because as a young adult I feel like they portray what being young- and having to deal with things- is really is like. All YA books do portray this well, but these are my top 3:

1. The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier
I actually didn't love this book until I let it soak in for a while, like ten minutes after I returned it to the library. The book is absolutely amazing, and I knew that from the start, but the psychology and thought put into it isn't really absorbed until you have had it run through your mind for a couple of days. I love this book and hope that anyone out there who hasn't read it will right now.

2. Divergent by Veronica Roth
This is the opposite of what happened with The Chocolate War, I loved it immediately. The opening scene with her haircut is just so powerful, like an undercurrent- while it isn't an obvious big flashy light powerful, it is a quiet one that you don't really see until you are halfway across the ocean. For all of you out there that have finished the whole trilogy, I totally approve of the ending.

3. Panic by Lauren Oliver
The way that I found this book is different from how I approached both of the other books listed above, I approached this with the I love that cover sort of mindset. And I know what you're thinking, don't judge a book by it's cover, well I do that and it usually works out for me. Panic perfectly explains what it is like to live in a crappy town that no one knows about and feel trapped there. I know what that feels like and when I read this book I couldn't stop relating to it and wanting to know if she gets out or not. Read this, please.

Adults/Parents: these books have helped me and they could very well help your child, there may be some language that you may not want them to use, but when the time comes that you think they can handle it give them these books immediately.
